The long-debated redesign of Kilburn High Road cleared its final hurdle on Monday night, as councillors voted 9-2 to approve the £4.2 million scheme that residents have campaigned on for more than a year.

Work begins in January and will widen pavements, plant 40 new trees and reduce the central stretch to a single traffic lane. The council says the project will be finished before next summer.

What changes

Plans approved by the planning committee show the High Road narrowed to one lane along its busiest stretch, with the freed space given over to wider pavements, seating and a protected cycle lane.

This is the biggest investment in our High Road in a generation.

Forty mature trees will be planted in structural soil cells, and the council has committed to maintaining them for five years.

Local traders had mixed reactions. A Kilburn traders' group backed the scheme but warned that disruption during construction could cost sales.
